What Do You Need Before Salah?

Before beginning prayer, a Muslim should make sure that the required conditions of Salah are fulfilled.

  • Prayer time has begun.
  • You have the required state of purification.
  • Your body and clothing meet the requirements of cleanliness.
  • The required parts of the body are covered.
  • You face the Qiblah when able.
  • You have the intention to perform the prayer.

How to Pray Salah Step by Step

1. Make the Intention

Know which prayer you are about to perform and make the intention for that prayer.

2. Face the Qiblah

Stand facing the direction of the Ka'bah in Makkah.

3. Begin With Takbir

Begin the prayer with Takbir, declaring the greatness of Allah.

4. Stand and Recite

While standing, recite the required Quranic passages, including Surah Al-Fatihah.

5. Perform Ruku'

Bow in the prescribed manner and perform the appropriate remembrance.

6. Return to Standing

Rise from Ruku' and stand upright before continuing.

7. Perform Sujud

Prostrate twice in each rak'ah while making the prescribed remembrance.

8. Complete the Rak'ahs

Continue the same basic sequence until you complete the required number of rak'ahs for your prayer.

9. Tashahhud and Final Sitting

Sit and recite the required testimony and supplications at the appropriate point in the prayer.

10. Finish With Taslim

Complete the prayer with Taslim.

How Many Rak'ahs Should You Pray?

The obligatory rak'ahs are:

  • Fajr: 2
  • Dhuhr: 4
  • Asr: 4
  • Maghrib: 3
