What is Hadith in Islam? Many Muslims hear Hadith daily but don't know what it is, how it was preserved, or difference between authentic and weak Hadith. Allah says: "And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from" [Quran 59:7]. Hadith is second source of Islam after Quran.

What is Hadith? What is Sunnah?

Hadith is everything narrated from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: his sayings, actions, approvals, and physical description. Sunnah is practical application of Hadith - how he lived. Example: Quran says "Establish prayer" [Quran 2:43] - Hadith explains how Prophet ﷺ prayed step by step. Without Hadith, we cannot pray, fast, or make Hajj correctly.

Why Hadith is Essential?

Quran commands to follow Prophet ﷺ: "He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah" [Quran 4:80]. And: "And We revealed to you the message that you may make clear to the people" [Quran 16:44]. Prophet ﷺ explained Quran. Also many rulings only in Hadith: details of Salah, number of rakahs, how to pay Zakat, what breaks fasting, etc.

Types of Hadith - Sahih, Hasan, Da'if

1. Sahih (Authentic)

Most authentic, chain continuous, narrators trustworthy and precise, no hidden defect. Example: Hadith in Bukhari and Muslim. We must follow it.

2. Hasan (Good)

Authentic but slightly less precision than Sahih. Also accepted in Fiqh.

3. Da'if (Weak)

Chain broken or narrator weak. Scholars say not to use weak Hadith for Aqeedah or Halal/Haram, only for virtues with conditions.

4. Mawdu' (Fabricated)

Lie invented against Prophet ﷺ. Haram to narrate except to warn people. Example: many false Hadiths spread on social media.

6 Famous Hadith Books - Kutub al-Sittah

1. Sahih al-Bukhari - Most authentic after Quran. 7,275 Hadiths with repetition. Compiled by Imam Bukhari (194-256H).
2. Sahih Muslim - Second most authentic. Imam Muslim (204-261H).
3. Sunan Abu Dawud - Focus on Fiqh rulings.
4. Jami' al-Tirmidhi - Grades Hadith, Fiqh differences.
5. Sunan al-Nasa'i
6. Sunan Ibn Majah

Plus: Muwatta Imam Malik and Musnad Ahmad - very important.

How Allah Preserved Hadith - Miracle

Not like other religions. Scholars invented system: Isnad (chain of narrators). They checked each narrator: when born, died, memory, honesty, who he met. Books of Rijal: 100,000+ narrators checked. This is why Hadith is preserved. Prophet ﷺ said: "May Allah make radiant the face of one who hears my statement and preserves it and conveys it" [Tirmidhi].

How to Learn Hadith as Beginner in USA & UK?

Don't start with Bukhari directly. Steps:

1. Start with 40 Hadith al-Nawawi - 40 short Hadiths that summarize Islam - foundation of Fiqh and Aqeedah.
2. Then Riyadh al-Saliheen - Hadiths about manners, worship.
3. Then study Mustalah al-Hadith - Science of how to verify Hadith.
4. Learn with teacher - Not from random translation. Need explanation of context and Fiqh.
