Madd means elongation - stretching a vowel sound longer than normal: 2, 4, or 6 counts (harakat). It happens with long vowels Alif, Waw, Yaa. For USA & UK beginners, Madd is key for beautiful recitation.

Main Types of Madd

  • 1. Madd Asli / Tabi'i (Natural) - 2 counts: Basic long vowel - e.g. ู‚ูŽุงู„ - qaa-la
  • 2. Madd Badal - 2 counts: Hamza + Madd letter - e.g. ุขู…ูŽู†ูŽ
  • 3. Madd Ewad - 2 counts: At stop with tanween fatha - e.g. ุนูŽู„ููŠู…ู‹ุง โ†’ ุนูŽู„ููŠู…ูŽุง
  • 4. Madd Far'i - 4 or 5 counts: Due to Hamza - Muttasil, Munfasil
  • 5. Madd Lazim - 6 counts: Due to sukoon/shaddah - longest, most important

How Long is Each Madd?

Start with 2 counts, then practice 4 and 6 with teacher. Don't stretch too short or too long.
